Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's soccer team lost to Bridgewater State University for the first time in 17 meetings on Wednesday night, as the Lyons dropped a 1-0 non-conference decision between the regionally-ranked teams at Swenson Field.
Wheaton, which is ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), had its four-game winning streak snapped in falling to 9-4-2. The Bears, who are tied for ninth in the region, are 10-3.
Despite dominating the stat sheet with a 25-5 shot advantage, the Lyons surrendered the game's lone goal in the 15th minute on a header off a cross. Wheaton took 15 of the second half's 17 attempts but came away empty. Each team also finished with five corner kicks.
Lyon senior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) smacked the crossbar in the 60th minute, while classmate David Winrow (South Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) fired a shot off a corner in the 62nd minute with Bridgewater State's goalie out of position before being turned away by a Bear defender.
The hosts nearly took a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but Lyon senior Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) made a diving stop to deflect the shot off the crossbar and over the goal frame. Smart finished with two stops.
Bridgewater State sophomore Simao Mendes (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) scored, while junior keeper DJ Siewierski (Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional) made 10 stops.
Wheaton completes its regular season home slate on Saturday with a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game against regionally-ranked Babson College at 1:00 p.m. The Lyons are in second place in the standings, while the fifth-ranked Beavers stand third.
