LEWISTON, ME- Wheaton College's men's and women's swimming &
diving teams completed their dual-meet schedule by swimming at
Bates College's Tarbell Pool against the Bobcats and Tufts
University on Saturday.
The Lyon women downed the hosts, 172-120 but fell to the Jumbos,
183-116 and finished the season with a 9-6-1 record. Wheaton's men
ended the campaign at 4-12 after bowing to both Bates, 170-110 and
Tufts, 231-64.
Junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert
Island) and sophomore Nicole Zais (Sudbury,
MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) each played a hand in two
victories for the Lyons, including when the pair joined sophomores
Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial)
and Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) on the
top 200-yard medley relay foursome. It finished in 1:53.88, which
bettered the two second-place teams by 0.66 seconds.
Zais also won the 50-yard breaststroke, while Meehan took the
50-yard backstroke. Following Meehan was senior Caitlin
Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy), who placed second
just 0.04 ticks ahead of the third-place finisher and 0.07 seconds
in front of the fourth-place swimmer. Farrell took the runner-up
spot in the 50-yard butterfly, as Wheaton athletes occupied the
second, third and fourth positions, finishing within 0.44 seconds
of one another.
Farrell, Piscetta, Zais and sophomore Stephany Perkins
(Monmouth, ME/Monmouth Academy) came in second during the
200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.18, placing only 0.26
seconds behind the winning foursome. Other runner-up finishers for
the Lyons were sophomore Sara Hollar (La Crescenta,
CA/Flintridge Prep) in the 200 fly and freshman
Julia Wright (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon
School) during the three-meter dive.
On the men's side, sophomore Jonathan Gold (West
Harrison, NY/Fordham Prep) notched a second-place showing
during the three-meter dive while nabbing third in the one-meter
event. Classmates Corey Best (Brentwood,
TN/Ravenwood) and Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg,
FL/Shorecrest Prep) took third in the 200-yard butterfly
and 50-yard backstroke, respectively, while freshman Cole
Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy)
finished third during the 1,000-yard freestyle race.
Wheaton's teams finish up their regular season campaigns next
Saturday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Winter
Invitational, which begins at 1:00 p.m.
