Women's Soccer Plays Roger Williams to 0-0 Draw

BRISTOL, R.I. -– The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team played host Roger Williams University to a 0-0 draw this evening at Bayside Field in Bristol, R.I.

The Lyons are now 2-0-1 on the season, while the Hawks are 1-0-3.

Roger Williams held a 19-15 margin in shots in addition to owning a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Each team was credited with four shots on goal.

The 0-0 shutout was the third straight scoreless blank sheet for the Hawks.

Sophomore goalie Olivia King (Simsbury, Conn.) stopped all four shots she saw for Wheaton to register her second shutout of the season. Sophomore forward Karina Contreras (Pawtucket, R.I.) led all players with seven shots the Lyons.

Roger Williams junior keeper Lizzy Thompson (Holland, Mass.) also turned away four shots for her first collegiate shutout. Senior forward Beth Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) topped all players with two shots on goal for the night.

The home team's best chance to score came in the sixth minute of the match. Senior forward Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, Mass.) lifted a shot that hit the far left post and bounced in front of the net. Yucius picked up the rebound, but her shot went just wide of the right post to keep the game scoreless with 5:52 gone.

Yucius took aim again in the 54th minute when she received a long cross at the left post, but King was there to stop the shot and keep the Hawks off the board.

Wheaton looked to crack the scoring column in the 59th minute when sophomore forward Camila Leiva (Warwick, R.I.) carried the ball down the right side of the box and fired a shot to the near post, but Thompson was there for the stop. The Lyons' best scoring opportunity came less than three minutes later when Leiva unleashed a shot from inside the box that rattled off the crossbar and landed in front of the goal line to maintain the scoreless tie.

Wheaton returns to the pitch when it travels to Bangor, Maine on Saturday, September 12 to take on Husson University at 2:00 p.m. while Roger Williams opens the Conference of New England slate in Boston on the same day against Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4:00 p.m.
