David Sach was announced as the first-ever Head Coach for both the Men's and Women's Fencing teams in June of 2023.
Sach comes to Wheaton after six years as the Head Coach for the Tufts University women's team. The Jumbos' mentor culminated his time in Medford with a historic year for Tufts Fencing, which saw the Jumbos capture a share of the Northeast Fencing Conference Championship after posting a 28-10 (.737) overall record and finishing the season with a number two Division III national-ranking in the Women's Fencing End-Season Coaches Poll. Five Tufts fencers earned United States Fencing Coaches Association All-America honors, including the first fencer in school history to earn an invite to the NCAA Championships. Three of the team's All-Americans were from Sach's most recent recruiting class, including a pair of first year First Teamers. For his efforts, Sach was one of four finalists for the 2023 USFCA National Coach of the Year award after leading the 2023 NFC Coaching Staff of the Year.
Under Sach's direction, the Jumbos' wildly successful campaign followed a natural progression of the program's impressive growth. During his six-year tenure at Tufts, 42 fencers qualified to compete at the NCAA Regional Championship, including a school-record high of 12 in 2023. Sach saw seven fencers qualify for the 2018 Regional following his first season with the Jumbos, before six earned regional nods in 2019 and eight in 2020 for the most since 2016. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFC elected to cancel the competitive season, but in 2022 the Jumbos' upward swing continued with nine All-Region qualifiers and three All-America selections.Â
Sach was masterful as the architect behind Tufts women's fencing's ascent into a national powerhouse. Sharing the NFC crown this past season is significant when you consider that in Sach's first year the Jumbos finished eighth in the conference, before steadily improving to a seventh-place showing in 2019, fifth in 2020 and second in 2022. Tufts compiled a 69-48 overall win-loss mark under Sach, including a remarkable 41-13 (.759) record over the past two seasons.Â
As a testament to Sach's coaching prowess, Subin Jeong was named as the recipient of the NFC's Sachs Award in 2020. The honor is named after Elif and Jason Sachs, former coaches at Tufts, and is given to the fencer with the best record with no prior fencing experience before college. Sach's teams were outstanding away from the playing surface as well, consistently posting a team grade point average in the 3.50 range or higher.
Sach is a 1999 graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London. He also serves as the Director of Operations at Boston Fencing Club, one of the oldest and most successful of its kind in the country. As a fencer, he won a number of cadet, junior, and senior national titles including a run of five back-to-back Junior National Championships. In addition he earned a pair of individual silver medals and a team gold at the Commonwealth Games. As a coach, he served as a British Fencing World Class Performance Pathway Sabre coach and has helped produce several national champions, World Cup medalists, a Cadet World Champion and Olympians.
