LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team was defeated by No. 6 California Lutheran University, 31-1, on the first day of the Gary Troyer Invitational hosted by Occidental College at De Mandel Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Lyons fall to 0-8 on the season, while the Kingsmen, who are ranked in the most recent College Water Polo Association Division III national poll, improve to 5-6.
Cal Lutheran scored at least seven goals in every quarter and owned a 44-12 shot advantage for the game.
Sophomore two-meter defender Josh Vander Wagen (Brookfield, Ill.) led Wheaton with a goal, while sophomore two-meter defender Jack Ruggiero (Hamden, Conn.) picked up a pair of steals. Sophomore goalie Dylan Boccali (Ventura, Calif.) made eight saves for the Lyons.
First year Ceasar Nava (Oxnard, Calif.), junior attacker Noah Carreon (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and junior attacker Luke Chang (Portland, Ore.) all netted four goals for the Kingsmen. Sophomore attacker Dylan Villanueva (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored three times to go with an assist and a steal. Sophomore keeper Dylan Bassler (Gig Harbor, Wash.) registered eight saves.
California Lutheran tallied the first 27 goals of the contest, including four goals from Carreon and Chang. Vander Wagen netted Wheaton's only marker with 2:58 remaining in the game. Nava netted the final two goals of the match for the Kingsmen.
Wheaton returns to the water tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. when it plays University of California Merced at Occidental, while Cal Lutheran plays Mount St. Mary's University (Md.) at 12:00 p.m. in Claremont, Calif. At Pomona-Pitzer.
