Field Hockey Nipped at Salve Regina in Overtime, 4-3

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was nipped in overtime by host Salve Regina University, 4-3, this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Gaudet Field in Middletown, R.I.

The Lyons drop to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in league play, while the Seahawks improve to 10-5 and 3-4.

Both teams were awarded eight penalty corners and Salve Regina took advantage of its eighth of the match with the game-winner coming following a corner in overtime. It was the home team's third goal off a corner.

Initially, the insert pass from senior midfielder Bella Gannon (West Yarmouth, Mass.) got away from senior forward Georgia Costello (North Easton, Mass.), but she recovered the ball and sent a cross to senior midfielder Angelina Regels (Schenectady, N.Y.) on the right side inside the arc. Regels quickly uncorked a shot that whistled past the Wheaton keeper and into the back of the cage on the near side to give the home team the victory with 24.9 seconds showing on the clock in overtime. The marker was the second of the season for Regels.

The Lyons made the most of their nine shots, scoring three times, compared to 26 shots for the Seahawks.

Senior forward Riley Levrault (Lakeville, Mass.) scored a goal and added an assist and sophomore midfielder Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, Conn.) and first year midfielder Gia Marotta (Lynnfield, Mass.) also added a goal each for Wheaton. Junior goalie Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) kept the Lyons in the match, finishing with 15 saves.

First year forward Elliot Lund (Beverly, Mass.), senior forward Julia Decker (Newton, N.J.) and sophomore forward Reese Interrante (Hopkinton, Mass.) each potted a goal for Salve Regina, while Costello recorded two assists. First year goalie Siany Ortez (Attleboro, Mass.) registered five saves.

Wheaton took advantage of a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter when first year midfielder Hannah Fortin (South Dartmouth, Mass.) fired a shot from the right side inside the arc, but it was turned away by Ortez. The ball took a fortuitous bounce to Wilsonki's feet, where she slapped the rebound shot past the Salve Regina netminder on her right side for the Lyon sophomore's team-high seventh marker of the year. The score pulled Wheaton even at 3-3 with 11:46 to play in the fourth period of play. The goal held up to send both teams into overtime when the horn ended regulation.

Wheaton made the most of its only shot of the opening quarter, scoring to take a 1-0 edge just 4:24 into the contest. Wilonski fired a shot as she rushed into the goalmouth, but Ortez was there for the stop. Levrault sent a rebound shot that was slowly moving toward the goal line, before Marotta made sure that it made it past Ortez, who dove back toward her right to try and prevent the score. The marker was her second of the season.

The Seahawks knotted the contest at 1-1 off a penalty corner with just 63 seconds left in the first period. Lund fired a shot headed for the cage, before Interrante re-directed the ball with a tip for her first collegiate goal.

The teams traded goals in a span of 2:16 to keep the match tied at 2-2 with 7:42 to go in the second quarter. Salve Regina took its first lead of the night when Decker scored her team-best 17th goal of the year. Sophomore midfielder Adelaide Baird (Springfield, Va.) collected a rebound from Costello and sent a short cross to the left side to Decker, who lifted a shot over Ferguson's shoulder for the go-ahead marker.

The Lyons took advantage of a penalty corner to re-tie the contest midway through the quarter. Junior forward Ally Slicer (Waterford, Maine) sent the insert pass to first year midfielder Sophie Kaczmarek (Gorham, Maine), who threaded a cross to Levrault on the left side. Levrault flipped a shot from 10 yards away that looped over Ortez and into the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season.

The Seahawks reclaimed the margin at 3-2, with another goal following a penalty corner with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter. Ferguson came off her line to keep the ball out of the goalmouth, but Costello's pass trickled through to Lund, who sent a shot from the left slot into the far side of the cage for her eighth goal and a one-goal advantage for Salve Regina.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, October 25 when it hosts NEWMAC foe Springfield College for a 12:00 p.m. Senior Day match, while the Seahawks head to Babson Park, Mass. to play league rival Babson College on the same day at the same time.
