Knox Leads Field Hockey over UMass Dartmouth, 3-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior forward Delia Knox (Cumberland, Maine) had a hand in all three goals, including two markers of her own, to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-1, this afternoon at Cressey Field in Dartmouth, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Corsairs dip to 2-3.

Wheaton dominated play, owning a 25-2 shot advantage, and was awarded 10 penalty corners, while UMass Dartmouth had two corners in the game.

Knox registered the first multi-goal effort of her career for the Lyons. Her first tally knotted the match at 1-1 just 2:32 into the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Maria Worden (Burlington, Vt.) sent a cross to the left of the goal mouth, where Knox received it and delivered a shot to the back of the cage for her first marker of the year.

Knox was in the right place at the right time for her second goal to give Wheaton the lead for good midway through the third quarter. Sophomore forward Ally Slicer (Waterford, Maine) slipped a cross from the left post across the length of the goal mouth and Knox gathered the deflected pass for a shot from the right slot that resulted in the eventual game-winning tally with 8:13 to play in the period.

The Lyons tacked on an insurance goal when they were able to convert on a penalty corner with 8:45 remaining in the game. Junior defender Maddie Hatch (Gorham, Maine) sent a cross well past the top of the circle, where Knox was able to comfortably collect it and send a cross to first year midfielder Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, Conn.) a few steps inside the circle. Wilonski wound up and fired a shot from deep inside the circle on the right side that zipped past the goalie for her first collegiate score and a 3-1 advantage.

The Corsairs got on the board just 2:16 into the opening quarter to take a 1-0 edge. Wheaton had not allowed a goal since its season opener on August 30 – a span of almost 150 minutes (149:45).

UMass Dartmouth made the most of its penalty corner chances, scoring on their first opportunity when first year forward Kenzie Bliven (Northport, N.Y.) sent the insert pass to senior midfielder Jenna Carvalho (Westport, Mass.), who directed a cross to sophomore defender Sophia Bouffard (South Burlington, Vt.) on the left side in front of the goalie box area. The second-year player ripped a shot just inside the left post for her third goal of the season to crack the scoring column for the home team.

Sophomore keeper Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) earned the win between the pipes for Wheaton, while first year goalie Shane Cueman (Glen Ridge, N.J.) made five saves for the Corsairs.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 14 when they travel to Gorham, Maine to take on University of Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth hosts Regis College (Mass.) on September 12 at 6:00 p.m.
