WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's water polo team fell to Austin College, 26-8, this morning at host Washington & Jefferson College's Henry Memorial Natatorium in Washington, Pa.
The Lyons slip to 0-9 on the season, while the Kangaroos improve to 5-5.
Austin held a 32-26 shot advantage over Wheaton.Â
First year utility player Spyros Rapsomanikis (Kerkyra, Greece) led the Lyons with three goals, four steals and an assist, while first year attacker Jared Safren (Miami, Fla.) scored a pair of goals and added two steals. First year 2-meter defender Josh Vander Wagen (Brookfield, Ill.) contributed with two goals and a steal and first year attacker Tristan Harrington (Mason, Ohio) scored a goal and came up with two steals. First year goalie Dylan Boccali (Ventura, Calif.) made four saves.
Junior attacker Aidan Wade (Flower Mound, Texas) was on fire all morning for the Roos, netting 10 goals in addition to a pair of assists and a steal. Sophomore center Sebastian Scheier (La Palma, Calif.) added four goals and three steals, while sophomore attacker Greyson Gaworecki (Seabrook, Texas) tallied three goals and a steal. First year goalie Caleb Maddox (Mesquite, Texas) stopped four of six shots, while sophomore Christian Saravia (Richmond, Texas) turned away four of nine shots.
Austin opened the game with a 3-0 lead, including a pair of goals from Wade, with 3:13 left in the opening quarter. Wheaton closed to within 5-3 with goals from Rapsomanikis, Safren and Vander Wagen to make it a two-goal game with just 44 ticks left in the quarter.Â
The Kangaroos put together a furious 11-0 blitz, fueled by three goals from Gaworecki to increase their advantage to a comfortable 16-3 count with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter.Â
Vander Wagen paused the offensive eruption from Austin with a goal coming at the 5:52 mark of the quarter to make it 16-4, but the Lyons were never able to get back in the game. Rapsomanikis found the back of the net with 4:51 to go in the contest for Wheaton's final marker of the contest to pull the Lyons within 22-8, before the Kangaroos closed the match with four unanswered goals, including a trio of markers from Wade.
