Box Score BRIGHTON, Mass. — The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated by host Simmons University, 2-0, this evening at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass.
The Lyons drop to 3-6 on the season, while the Sharks win their fourth in a row to improve to 7-1.
The match was a defensive battle with shots coming at a premium. Simmons held a 12-5 advantage, despite owning a commanding 8-1 margin in penalty corners. The Sharks were limited to just seven shots on goal by the Wheaton defense.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first 41 minutes of the match, before Simmons finally cracked the scoring column with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Junior forward Anna Tedeschi (Hanover, Mass.) tallied the first of two goals on the night to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead after converting a cross from junior forward Hannah Groves (Durham, Maine).
Tedeschi scored again less than three minutes later to double Simmons' lead with the final marker of the night with her third multi-goal performance of the year. Junior forward Sydney Gonyea (Lebanon, N.H.) assisted on Tedeschi's team-leading 12th goal of the season with just 73 seconds left in the period.
Neither team was able to find the back of the cage in the fourth quarter with senior keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) stopping all three shots she faced in the quarter as part of a five-save effort in the game for the Lyons.
First year keeper Sam Buck (Portsmouth, N.H.) registered her second career shutout with three saves for the Sharks.
Senior midfielder Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, Vt.) and junior forward Delia Knox (Cumberland Center, Maine) each paced the Wheaton offense with a pair of shots each.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 30 when they host New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe No. 23 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Nordin Field at 4:00 p.m., while Simmons hosts Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on the same day at 11:00 a.m.
