Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Senior forward Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Worcester State University this evening at Nordin Field in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 2-6 on the season, while the Lancers fall to 3-3.
Senior forward, Gabby Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.) led Shekarchi off of a breakaway for her third goal of the year and the game-winning tally early into the fourth quarter to give Wheaton a 2-1 edge while holding off the Lancers.
The Lyons wasted no time getting on the board, scoring less than three minutes into the contest when the senior co-captain scored her first tally of the night off of a top of the circle pass from teammate, Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, Vt.) to give the Lyons the 1-0 lead.
Wheaton held an 8-2 margin on penalty corners including three each in the first and second quarters.
Worcester State evened the score just 2:30 into in the third quarter when junior forward Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season in a scrum in front of the cage.
Junior keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made 12 saves to earn the win for the Lyons, while sophomore goalie Madison Ferrara (Somerset,Mass.) stopped nine shots for the Lancers.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, September 24 when it travels to Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play at 12:00 p.m., while the Lancers host Worcester Polytechnic Institute on September 22 at 7:00 p.m.
