Box Score NORTON, Mass. — It took a shootout to determine a winner after four scoreless quarters and two overtime periods without a goal, but University of New England won the shootout, 2-0, to secure a 1-0 victory over host Wheaton College (Mass.) this afternoon on Nordin Field in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons slip to 3-10 on the season, while the Nor'Easters improve to 7-6.
UNE dominated play with a 20-9 shot advantage, including 15-4 in regulation. Wheaton's defense was exceptional, denying the Nor'Easters in 16 penalty corner opportunities to the home team's five.
First year defender Shelly Tremblay (Barre, Mass.) carried the ball to the left side of the cage ahd flipped a back-handed shot into the upper half of the cage to give UNE a 1-0 edge after the first round of the shootout. Senior defender Kate Lindmark (Norfolk, Mass.) gave the visitors a 2-0 margin in the shootout's second round when she dribbled into the right side of the goal mouth and fired a shot between the legs of the Lyon keeper.
Senior keeper Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J.) stopped all four rounds of attempts from Wheaton in the shootout to preserve the victory for the Nor'Easters.
The Lyons looked to take advantage of their opportunities in the overtime periods, including the only penalty corner for either team in the second overtime. Sophomore midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) wound up for a shot inside the top of the circle but the shot went wide with 2:21 left in the period. Wheaton had a final chance for victory prior to the shootout when senior forward Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) fired a shot on the right side, but was turned back by Pych with 17 ticks left in the second overtime period.
The Lyons junior keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) rose to the challenge again and again in the first overtime period, stopping four shots coming from five penalty corners for UNE.
The Nor'Easters threatened to score the game's only goal in regulation late in the first quarter when Tremblay lifted a shot on the left side, following a corner, but Lapreziosa batted it down with 2:32 left in the quarter.
Pych registered four saves to post her seventh career shutout for UNE, while Lapreziosa turned away 11 shots for her eighth double-digit save effort of the season and third lifetime shutout for Wheaton.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, October 15 when they host No. 9 Babson College on Nordin Field at 12:00 p.m. in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play, while the Nor'Easters travel to Medford, Mass. on October 12 to take on No. 4 Tufts University for a 6:00 p.m.
