Field Hockey Edged by Roger Williams, 1-0

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- Junior goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) stopped 17 shots, but the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated by visiting Roger Williams University, 1-0, this evening on a slick Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 3-14 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 10-7.

Roger Williams controlled play from start to finish and outshot Wheaton, 28-2, including 17-1 in the second half, while holding an 8-2 advantage on penalty corners.

Despite facing 17 shots through three quarters, the Lyon defense kept the Hawks off the board, but it took just 28 seconds of the fourth quarter for Roger Williams to finally break through.

First year forward Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the match in a game, where a steady mist that turned into rain made goal scoring a premium.

Junior forward Kelly Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.) possessed the ball in the left slot and slipped a short cross to King in front of the cage for a shot that found the back of the cage on the right side for her team-leading ninth marker of the season. The Hawks fired seven more shots on goal for the remainder of the quarter, but all were turned back.

Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) registered saves of every variety throughout the night, whether it was her stick, her blocker or high, hard shots and finished the evening with her 12th double-digit save effort of the season, including a string of five consecutive outings. First year goalie Hannah Brazil (East Sandwich, Mass.) was untested in the match and recorded her second shutout for Roger Williams.

Junior midfielder Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, Vt.) and first year Mackenna Cooke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) each attempted a shot for the Lyons.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, October 29 when it hosts New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Mount Holyoke College at 12:00 p.m. on Nordin Field on Senior Day, while the Hawks host Salve Regina University on October 28 at 4:00 p.m.
