Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team fell at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 6-0, in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play this afternoon at H. Carr Field in Worcester, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers, who have won six of their last seven, improve to 10-6 and 6-1.
Graduated student forward Lauren Dishong (Milford, N.H.) registered her second career hat trick for WPI.
Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, Conn.) got the scoring going for the Engineers in the first period with a goal in the second minute of action, netting the ultimate game-winner on a penalty stroke.
Dishong made it a 2-0 game before the end of the first quarter, scoring her first goal of the game in the 14th minute of action for WPI. Drasser sent a pass to mid circle setting up Dishong who found the left side of the cage for the 2-0 lead.
The second period saw another early goal for the Engineers when Dishong found the back of the goal once again in the 18th minute of action with some help from first year forward Abbey Powers (Halifax, Mass.). First year Alaina Lambert (Winslow, Maine) made it a 4-0 lead for WPI in the 23rd minute with some help from Dishong. Dishong ripped a shot at the cage and Lambert was waiting on the left side and able to tap it in for the score.
Neither team was able to score in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw junior midfielder Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) tally her sixth goal of the season for the Engineers in the 57th minute coming from halfway up the field taking a shot straight at the goal for the score. Twenty-seven seconds later Dishong earned her hat trick with some help from senior midfielder Holly Mason (Plymouth, N.H.). Mason sent a pass into the circle to an awaiting Dishong who hit the top left corner of the goal for the six-goal WPI advantage.
Junior midfielder Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, VT) manufactured a shot on goal for Wheaton.
The Engineers owned a 27-1 shot advantage and a 14-3 margin on penalty corners.
Junior goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, ME) was tested often and turned away 11 shots for the Lyons. Senior goalie Nini Acquista (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished with her fourth shutout of the season for WPI, stopping the lone shot that came her way.
Wheaton will play again when it hosts Roger Williams University at Nordin Field on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m., while the Engineers are back in action on October 26 when they host Western New England University at 4:30 pm.
