Field Hockey Stifles UMass Dartmouth, 3-0

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team scored three times in the first half, en-route to a 3-0 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this evening at Nordin Field in Norton, Mass. The Lyons pick up their first win of the season and improve to 1-2, while the Corsairs fall to 1-2.

Wheaton wasted no time getting on the board, scoring less than three minutes into the contest when junior midfielder Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) scored her first goal of the year at the 2:58 mark of the first quarter for a 1-0 lead.

The Lyons added to their lead, 12 minutes later, when first year midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) notched her first collegiate goal with just three seconds left in the opening quarter of play to give the home team a 2-0 margin. The second goal capped a dominant first quarter for Wheaton, holding UMass Dartmouth without a shot, while the Lyons fired six times.

Senior midfielder Lindsay Janeczek (Glastonbury, Conn.) capped the scoring for Wheaton when she converted a penalty stroke with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter to give the Lyons a 3-0 lead.

It was all the offense Wheaton needed as the defense held the Corsairs to just one second quarter shot for the entire match. The Lyons attempted 13 shots for the night and owned a 6-3 margin on penalty corners.

Sophomore keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) stopped the only shot on frame for Wheaton in 30 minutes of play, before yielding to first year goalie Neilee Hess (Franklin, Mass.), who was untested in her collegiate debut.

First year midfielder Jenna Carvalho (Westport, Mass.) recorded the only shot for UMass Dartmouth, while first year keeper Hannah Trombly (Foxborough, Mass.) made five saves.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 11 when they return to Nordin Field to host Nichols College at 12:00 p.m., while the Corsairs host Salve Regina University on September 9 on Cressey Field at 7:00 p.m.
