Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated by visiting Wesleyan University, 2-0, this evening on Nordin Field in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 4-5 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 4-4.

Wesleyan finished the match with a 15-5 shot advantage and owned a 10-4 margin on penalty corners.

Wesleyan took advantage of its penalty corners opportunities, scoring both of its goals off corners.

Junior forward Diana Schwarz (Etna, N.H.) tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Cardinals off a feed from classmate Leah Ewers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at the 5:52 mark of the opening quarter.

The Lyons held their guests scoreless in the second quarter, despite five shots.  Wesleyan added an insurance goal just 3:57 into the third quarter when sophomore Ava Galdenzi (North Branford, Conn.) found the back of the cage for her third goal of the year. Sophomore Melanie Lim (Haverford, Pa.) assisted on the goal on the penalty corner for a 2-0 lead.

Wheaton looked to take advantage of its own penalty corner situation when first year midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) fired a shot that was saved by the Cardinals goalie with just 14 seconds showing on the third quarter clock. Junior defender Bridget Healy (Holyoke, Mass.) followed with another shot for the Lyons, but her attempt went wide with two ticks left on the clock.

Three goalies combined on the shutout for Wesleyan with sophomore starting keeper Kylie Nelson-Marois (Dover, N.H.) picking up the win with a spotless first quarter. Senior Caitlin Grant (North Easton, Mass.) made a save in 40:24 of play and first year Athena Vadnal (Shaker Heights, Ohio) did not see a shot in 4:36 of action. Sophomore goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) stopped six shots for Wheaton.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, October 2 when they travel to Northampton, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Smith College at 1:00 p.m., while the Cardinals head to Babson Park, Mass. on October 7 to take on Babson College at 6:00 p.m.
