Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team fell to visiting Wellesley College, 2-1, in overtime this evening on Nordin Field in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in their conference opener, while the Blue improve to 3-2 and a perfect 2-0 in league play.
Sophomore forward Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.) scored her second goal of the night in overtime to give Wellesley the win.
The Blue held slight advantages in shots (14-12) and penalty corners (7-6) for the game.
Wheaton broke a scoreless tie with 4:43 left in the third quarter. First year midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) fired a shot following a penalty corner and senior Ellie Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) put a stick on it to direct it into the back of the cage for a 1-0 home edge.
Lenart tied the match with 7:40 to play in regulation for Wellesley when she possessed the ball on the right side of the goal area and fired a shot into the left side for her first tally and a 1-1 score.
The Lyons controlled possession and held a 7-3 shot margin in the second half, but neither team was able to score in the final seven minutes of play to send the match into overtime.
Lenart carried the ball into the goalmouth and drew the Wheaton keeper out before lifting a shot over her shoulder and into the top right corner of the cage with 2:36 left in overtime for the win.
The sophomore's overtime score was her team-leading fifth marker and was one of five shots in the extra period for the Blue to the Lyons' two attempts.
Sophomore keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made six saves for Wheaton, while junior goalie Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) turned away six shots to earn the victory for Wellesley.
The Lyons return to action on Thursday, September 30 when they host Wesleyan College (Conn.) at 7:00 p.m., while the Blue host University of New England on September 29 at 7:00 p.m.
