Field Hockey Defeated by Worcester State, 2-1, in Overtime

Box Score

Norton, Mass. --  The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated 2-1 in overtime by visiting Worcester State University this afternoon at Nordin Field in Norton Mass. The loss ends a four-game winning streak as the Lyons fall to 4-3 on the season, while the Lancers improve to 5-1. The match marked the first time the schools had played each other since 1977 and just the third meeting overall.

Junior forward Karalyn Jones (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored 79 seconds into overtime to give Worcester State the win. Junior forward Emily Floury (Warren, Mass.) found Jones on the back post for the winning tally.

The Lancers owned a 13-9 shot advantage, including 9-3 in the second half and the only shot of the extra period. Worcester State also held an 11-4 margin on penalty corners.

Wheaton broke the scoring open in the second quarter when junior midfielder Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year with five and a half minutes left in the second quarter. The marker also extended her goal-scoring streak to five straight contests for the longest such streak since Michelle Connolly tallied at least one marker in six consecutive matches in 2018.

Worcester State University was quick to answer with a goal less than five minutes later to knot the game at 1-1. Senior forward Hope Makey (Clinton, Mass.) found junior Carly Duff (Warren, Mass.) in front of the net for her third goal of the season with just 44 seconds showing on the second quarter clock.

The Lyons owned a 6-3 shot advantage in the first half, before the Lancers went on the offensive in the second stanza. Wheaton's defense kept the match deadlocked before the team's headed to overtime.

First year Madison Ferrara (Somerset, Mass.) stopped five shots to earn the victory for Worcester State, while sophomore keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) turned away six shots, including five in the second half, for the Lyons.

The Lyons return to action on Nordin Field on Friday, September 24 when they host Wellesley College at 7:00 p.m. to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play at Nordin Field in Norton Mass., while the Lancers head to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute on September 22 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
