Box Score

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team made the most of its four shots, scoring three times, while sophomore goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made seven saves in a 3-1 victory over host Smith College this afternoon in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest in Northampton, Mass. The Lyons even their record at 5-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Pioneers fall to 3-7 and 1-2.

Smith owned a 9-4 shot advantage to punctuate the effort of Lapreziosa and the efficiency of scoring chances by the Wheaton offense. The Pioneers boasted a 6-4 margin in penalty corners as well.

Smith junior midfielder Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif.) put the home team on the board early in the second quarter with her fourth goal of the season coming just under 19 minutes into the match for a 1-0 edge.

The Lyons defense shut down the Pioneers for the remainder of the match, while the offense went to work. First year midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) pulled Wheaton even at 24:46 with her second goal of the season coming after a penalty corner.

The Lyons took advantage of another penalty corner situation in the third quarter when senior forward Ellie Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) found the back of the cage for her fifth marker of the season coming at 32:22 for a 2-1 edge.

Wheaton put some important distance between itself and Smith with another goal in the fourth quarter to make it 3-1. Junior back Bridget Healy (Holyoke, Mass.) broke through on a penalty corner for her first collegiate tally with 8:13 remaining in the match.

Senior goalie Channy Cornell (Arlington, Texas) was credited with one save for the Pioneers.

The Lyons return to action on Tuesday, October 5 when they host NEWMAC foe Springfield College on Nordin Field at 7:00 p.m., while Smith hosts nearby NEWMAC opponent Mount Holyoke College on the same night and time.
