Field Hockey Defeats Clark, 3-1

NORTON, Mass. - After holding the lead for all of regulation, the Wheaton College field hockey team defeated the Clark University Cougars, 3-1, on Saturday at Nordin Field for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win during the College's Fall Fest celebration.

The Lyons (6-7, 1-4 NEWMAC) outshot the Cougars (5-10, 0-5 NEWMAC) 14-10, while holding a 12-11 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior Amelia Gage started action for Wheaton during the first half when she notched a goal at 14:40 after breaking through a cluster of Clark's defense to hop on the board first.

The Lyons didn't hold back as junior Katie Peters hit a pass to Gage who shot through her team-leading eighth goal of the season to the right side of the net.

One of Clark's ten shots made its way into the goal during later that half as Lauren Mackey pushed in a goal at 62:23 from to make it, 2-1. Peters concluded scoring action for Wheaton as she registered a goal of her own and her seventh of the season, to give the Lyons the extra boost and push them ahead, 3-1. She was assisted by sophomore Michelle Connolly.

Junior goalkeeper Riley Thompson earned the win for the Lyons and advances to 6-7 on the season, tallying three saves.

The Lyons travel to Babson College on Tuesday for another NEWMAC competition with action starting at 6 p.m.
