Lyons Battle #10 Wellesley; Fall 4-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wheaton College field hockey team had its hands full on Saturday afternoon, traveling to #10 Wellesley College for the start of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, with the Lyons falling 4-1.

The Lyons suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Blue improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley got on the board first with a goal in the 16th minute with a goal from Courtney Peterson. The goal is Peterson's third of the season. The Blue made it 2-0 five minutes later with a feed from Anissa Sridhar to Rachel Hwang.

Wellesley added two more goals just 15 minutes into the second half to make it a 4-0 contest. Nikki Sharkin netted the first goal, while Annah Flesch scored the second.

Despite the deficit, the Lyons continued to fight, finally finding the net in the 64th minute. The Wheaton goal came on a penalty corner played in from Katie Peters to Amelia Gage, who knocked in her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The assist is Peters fifth of the season. 

Despite picking up the loss, Riley Thompson had a strong game in goal for the Lyons, coming up with 18 saves on 22 shots on goal. Defender Salena Helmreich also had a good game for Wheaton, coming up with four defensive saves.

Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Simmons for a 7 p.m. contest.
