Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – One goal wouldn't be enough as the Wheaton College field hockey team was defeated, 5-1, against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers in a conference battle on Tuesday.
The Engineers (7-2, 3-0 NEWMAC) jumped on the board quick as they scored the first goal of the game two minutes in.
Kelsey Buckley responded with a shot on goal of her own, but fell just short. Michelle Trainor was next up and zipped one close for the Lyons, but was placed slightly wide.
In the 16th minute, Amelia Gage found an opening for Wheaton and blazed a goal in, tying the game at one. This was her seventh goal of the season. She was assisted by Hailey Kohler. This was the first goal MIT has given up in four games.
However, MIT wouldn't give in as they tallied two more goals before the half was over pushing ahead, 3-1.
In the second half, the Lyons had to keep up on defense as the Engineers wouldn't let up and pressured Wheaton with more shots. Eventually they added two more goals to the scoreboard, bringing the final to 5-1.
Wheaton goalkeeper Riley Thompson (6-4) grabbed 11 saves.
The Lyons host Elms College on Thursday at Nordin Field in the "Play for the Cure" Cancer Awareness Night matchup at 7 p.m.
