Box Score Stein adds to NCAA-leading goal total
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team was dealt a 6-0 loss by Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.
Smith senior forward Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) potted two goals to pace the Pioneers offense. Stein entered today's contest leading all NCAA Division III student-athletes in goals per game (2.83) and points per game (6.67). Stein currently has 19 goals and seven assists for 45 points.
Senior co-captain Emma Camilleri (Florence, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson), junior Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and sophomores Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) all added tallies in the win.
Wheaton senior goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) turned away five shots in a reserve role for the Lyons. Junior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) had two saves. Smith sophomore goalkeeper Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) recorded her first-career shutout on seven saves.
The Pioneers outshot Wheaton, 18-10, in the contest and held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Smith jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening eight minutes of the contest receiving goals from Meagher at 1:32, Stein at 6:37 and Camilleri at 8:23. The Pioneers closed out the half with markers as Rau rounded out the scoring at 11:13 in the opening stanza.
Wheaton (3-7, 0-2 NEWMAC) hosts Elms College tomorrow at 1 p.m. in a non-conference clash at Nordin Field. Smith (7-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) welcome Simmons College to its campus on Tuesday, October 1 at 4 p.m. Despite the loss, the Lyons still hold a 23-16-0 advantage in the all-time series against Smith dating back to 1980.
