Box Score Norberg nets two goals in first career game
GORHAM, Maine – The Wheaton College field hockey team claimed a 5-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University in its 2013 season opener on Friday morning at Hannaford Field.
Freshman Holly Norberg (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) scored a pair of goals to lead the Lyons while classmate Ellen Gulezian (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional), sophomore Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass./Worcester Academy) and senior co-captain Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) all contributed one marker apiece to deliver first-year head coach Cara Reese her first victory at Wheaton. Cassandra McClaflin netted the Wildcats lone goal at 47:52 off of a penalty corner.
Lyons' senior goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) recorded six saves – all in the second half – to claim her 23rd career win, two shy of Mary Catherine Boll '07 for fourth all-time on the list.
Wheaton scored four unanswered goals to begin the contest as Norberg potted her first career marker at 7:31 on a penalty stroke to get the offense going. Harris followed with her first career goal at 19:57 finishing on a nice feed from Chick for a 2-0 advantage. With her assist on Harris' goal, Chick is now tied for fourth all-time in program history with Cara Collins '02 with 19 total in her career.
Gulezian made it 3-0 on an unassisted tally at 24:18 before Chick notched her second point of the day from freshman forward Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) at the 29:25 mark. Norberg closed out the scoring at 54:29 (unassisted).
Wheaton outshot Johnson & Wales 20-7 with 19 of the Lyons shots coming in the first half. Wildcats' goalkeeper Jaclyn Lyons turned away nine shots in the loss.
The Blue and White return to action tomorrow against Southern Maine in Gorham, Maine at noon.
