Box Score REHOBOTH, Mass.- Wheaton College junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) scored a pair of goals and the game-winner while making a return to her hometown on Tuesday, leading the Lyon field hockey team to a 4-2 victory in Wheaton's home opener on a rain-soaked Faxon Field.
Collecting its first victory of the season, the Blue and White improved to 1-2 on the season, while the AMCATS suffered their initial loss in falling to 1-1.
Rocha tallied the game-winner with 3:32 remaining, as sophomore Sarah McNicholas (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) picked up the assist. McNicholas finished with two helpers on the afternoon, while junior Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) added a marker and an assist.
Anna Maria cracked the scoring column first, tallying two times 9:16 apart to capture a 2-0 lead with less than eight minutes to play in the opening half. Rocha sliced her team's deficit in half, slamming home a long pass outside the circle from junior Eliza Kennedy (Madison, Conn./Tabor Academy) in the 32nd minute.
Wheaton carried its late-half momentum into the second frame, where the hosts maintained possession for most of the stanza, holding advantages of 15-2 in shots and 7-1 in penalty corners. Chick fed sophomore Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School) for the equalizer with less than 11 minutes showing on the clock.
In the 67th minute, Rocha was on the receiving end of a short cross from McNicholas. Not even three minutes later, McNicholas dumped her pass into the circle to a waiting Chick for the insurance strike.
Junior goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) made two saves in the victory, while Anna Maria split time between two keepers. Freshman Brittany Marment (Leicester, Mass./Leicester) had one stop while allowing one goal in the opening half, and classmate Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) turned aside nine second-half shots but allowed three markers in the loss.
Wheaton heads back on the road this Saturday for a non-league match at Salve Regina University. Start time at Gaudet Field in Middletown, R.I., is set for 5:00 p.m.
